The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023

The upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 still seems like a distant dream for many cricket enthusiasts around the world. However, with less than 2 years to go until the tournament begins, excitement for this prestigious event is starting to build. The tournament is set to take place from  5 October to 19 November 2023, with India being the host of this magnificent event.

The top 8 of 13 sides in the Super League qualified for the World Cup, although as hosts India (who finished sixth) were guaranteed a place in the tournament. In June and July 2023, the bottom 5 teams from the Super League and 5 associate sides competed in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier for the remaining 2 places.

This will be the first World Cup not to include former winners West Indies, who failed to progress from the Qualifier after their defeat to Scotland. Full members Ireland and Zimbabwe also missed out on qualification, meaning three of the four full members who took part in the Qualifier did not qualify, while the final qualification spot fell to an eliminator between the two leading associates, who were Scotland and Netherlands.

The tournament will begin with the opening ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where the first match of the tournament will also take place. The rest of the matches will be played across nine different venues in six different cities in India. These venues include the likes of Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, and many more. This will be the first time since 2011 that India will be hosting the Men’s Cricket World Cup, and it promises to be a fantastic event for cricket fans all around the globe.

The schedule for the tournament looks exciting, with each team playing a minimum of 6 matches in the group stage, which will be followed by the knockout stages. The top 4 teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals, with the winners progressing to the semifinals. The two winners of the semifinals will then face each other in the grand final to determine the winner of the tournament. The first match and final will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and it promises to be a spectacle befitting of the world’s most prestigious cricket tournament.

As the hosts of the tournament, India will be looking to lift the trophy for the third time, having previously been crowned champions in 1983 and 2011. They will be competitors to other strong teams such as Australia and England, who are both former champions as well. Meanwhile, teams like Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Pakistan have also proven their mettle in previous cricket tournaments and are expected to create upsets.
